Some time ago, we saw postcard view of a train stopping on the High Street of this historic borough in Cumberland County of south-central Pennsylvania:
“The Train in the City” (1920).
In January of 1928, Lucy received a postcard announcement from Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Heckman.
The Heckmans lived at 125 Elm Street, a frame single-family home that was built in 1890.
A wooden structure with large square rooms, the house still stands in apparent good repair.
The home is separated from other houses on the street by narrow alleys.

The face of the postcard is a light-hearted notice that a new “lodger” has been taken into the Heckman household.
The baby, “when here long enough to understand our language”, will answer to the name, “Edgar Clair Heckman”.
At 8 and ¾ pounds, the “winsome one” is a welcome example of “sweet, plump babyhood”.
Beneath the printed text is an illustration of an adult stork returning to the chimney-top home of a stork nest containing nestlings.

On the reverse, the new parents inscribed only their names and address.
One imagines that they had several dozen postcards to address and mail.
Miss Lucy preserved the birth announcement in very good condition throughout her life.
One hopes that the baby grew up in a household of love and security.
RESEARCH NOTE
On January 14, 1928, Edgar Clair Heckman was born in Carlisle, PA.
He was the only child of Edgar Bross Heckman 1899-1994) and Mary Elizabeth McGowen (1901-1982)
Edgar Jr. went by “Ed”.
He graduated from Carlisle High School (Class of 1945) and served in the US Army Air Corps in Europe during 1946 and 1947.
In 1951, he married Shirley Virginia Woodworth.
Ed and Shirley had two sons.
For 43 years, Ed managed retail stores in several locations including West Virginia and Maryland.
After retirement, Ed and Shirley resided on “Space Coast” of southeast Florida.
At age 90, Shirley died in Florida in 2016; Ed passed away in 2020 at age 92.
The couple were members of the Presbyterian Church.
At the time of his death, Ed was survived by two sons, three granddaughters, five great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Ed was buried with military honors in the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery – beside the grave of Shirley, his wife of 62 years.
