“A Remembrance for Master Lloyd” – Elysburg, PA (1910)

Master Lloyd Startzel resided in Elysburg, a census-designated place in Ralpho Township of Northumberland County in central Pennsylvania.

This hilly area, about 45 miles northeast of Harrisburg, is largely farmland with scattered residential clusters.

Many of the people passing through Elysburg are visitors to the nearby Knoebels Amusement Park.

In March of 1910, Lloyd received a postcard from Carrie Mutchler.

The postcard was mailed from Shamokin, a city at the edge of the Anthracite Coal Region of northeast Pennsylvania, and a center of industry and commerce in the Susquehanna River Valley.

We recently saw a postcard story about industry in Shamokin: “Elva Said to Send a Card” (1910).

Elysburg is about 8 miles north of Shamokin.

The face of the postcard is a purple field, bordered with gold lines.

Large pansies surround a medallion drawing of a placid stream lined with trees with light bark.

Above the scene is the word, “Remembrance”.

It may mean that Lloyd was celebrating a birthday.

The postcard appears to have been published in the United States by an unknown printer.

On the reverse, Carrie has written only her name.

Lloyd preserved the remembrance throughout his life.

One hopes that he enjoyed many birthdays and that he exchanged many more postcards.

RESEARCH NOTE

On March 11, 1897, Lloyd Calvin Startzel was born in Ralpho Township, PA.

He was the son of Ammon J. Startzel (1869-1962) and Anna C. Goss (1874-1958).

Lloyd had one brother and three sisters: all the children lived past 70 years.

Lloyd registered for the Draft in 1917, and was listed in military service in St. Louis in 1919.

At some time, Lloyd married Mary Katherine Mutchler (1901-1995).

(I cannot find documentation that Mary Katherine is “Carrie” who sent the postcard when Lloyd turned 13.)

The couple had one child, a daughter (born in 1926) who died in 2024.

Lloyd and Mary Katherine lived in Northumberland County throughout their long lives.

On March 31, 1995, Lloyd died at the age of 98.

Just three months later, Mary Katherine died at the age of 93.

They are buried together in St. Peter’s Reformed Cemetery in Northumberland County.
