In March of 1911, Mrs. Bittinger received a birthday postcard from Mary.

Mary mailed the greeting from Chambersburg, a borough in the Cumberland Valley of south-central Pennsylvania.

The face of the postcard is illustrated by a magnificent drawing of pink roses.

Around the blossoms is an ornate frame; the angular shape is softened by suggestions of vines, tendrils, and blossoms – reflecting Art Nouveau motifs.

Beneath the drawing is a legend in block letters: “With Every Good Wish for Your Birthday”.

On the reverse, Mary writes: “Many happy returns of the day March 8th”.

We do not know the relationship between Mrs. Bittinger and Mary, but the birthday celebrant preserved the postcard throughout her life.

One hopes that Mrs. Bittinger had a wonderful birthday and that she remained a good friend and correspondent to Mary.
