A Christmas Bird from The Doctor – Fulton, NY (1907)

Mrs. Truman Grant lived near Fulton, a town on the Oswego River near Lake Ontario in central New York.

The post office in Fulton was established in 1826.

In December of 1907, Mrs. Grant received a Christmas postcard from Dr. Kilmer.

Dr. Kilmer mailed the greeting from Binghamton, a city at the juncture of the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers in the Southern Tier of central New York State – near the border of Pennsylvania.

It is unclear if this was a Christmas remembrance sent to each patient in the physician’s practice, or if Mrs. Grant numbered a doctor among her friends and correspondents.

I believe that “Dr. Kilmer” may be the owner/proprietor of a remarkable patent medicine company headquartered in Binghamton during the early 20th century,

If this is our “Swamp Root” producer, Dr. Kilmer may have mailed hundreds of postcards to favored customers.

The face of the postcard is an original drawing of a bird perched atop a thin branch of holly.

A weak sun of winter shines upon the bird.

The top edge of the postcard has light streaks that resemble icicles, and white spots that suggest falling snow.

At the lower right, we see the markings that distinguish the “Oilette” style of printing – intended to resemble the effects of oil paint.

“Oilette” was trademarked by the notable English firm of art publishers, Raphael Tuck & Sons.

On the reverse, the sender writes in a bold style, “Merry Christmas from Dr. Kilmer.”

It seems that Mrs. Grant was delighted by the postcard as it was preserved in good condition throughout her lifetime.

One hopes that Mrs. Grant, Dr. Kilmer, and all of the physician’s patients, enjoyed a wonderful Christmas.
