Mr. Henry Badley lived in Newberg, a city on the Willamette River in northwest Oregon.

The city, first settled in the 1840’s and incorporated in 1889, was the home to the first Quaker settlement in Oregon.
George Fox University, the successor to Friends Pacific Academy of 1888, is located in the center of Newberg.

In a year near 1910, Henry received a Christmas postcard from his niece, Lela.
The postcard was not mailed, so it is not clear how far Lela lived from her uncle.
If the Christmas greeting was hand-delivered, we may assume that Lela did not live far from Newberg.

The face of the postcard is a pretty drawing of a bunch of pansies in a copper-colored vessel.
Beneath the artwork is a legend: “A Joyful Christmas”
The lettering is so similar (in color and brightness) to the background that the message is very indistinct.
The artwork is not signed, so the artist (like many others) will remain anonymous.

On the reverse, Lela notes, “We have some snow for a change”.
I did not consult weather sites to see what snowfall was typical in the Pacific Northwest during the early 20th century – but Lela seems to think the snow was noteworthy.
She signs her message, “Your Neice (sic), Lela Badley”
One hopes that Uncle Henry, his niece, and all the members of their family enjoyed a wonderful Christmas season.
