A Christmas Squirrel for the Ranch – Fallon, Nevada (1911)

In December of 1911, Miss Lila Hurst was living on the Ed McClain Ranch near Fallon, Nevada.

Fallon is a city, south of the Carson River in the Lahontan Valley of west central Nevada.

The settlement grew in the mid-19th century from would-be gold-miners who settled there after crossing the Carson River.

Sadly, we do not know what Lila did on the ranch.

Lila had a friend, John Johnson, who lived on the Fred Whitman Ranch also near Fallon.

John sent Lila a Christmas postcard featuring the drawing of a squirrel eating a nut atop a stump.

The legend declares, “A merry Christmas”.

The postcard, printed in the United States, was mailed from Fallon on Christmas Day in 1911.

On the reverse, John wishes Lila a “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”.

One hopes that Lila and John, and all the hands at the ranches of Nevada, enjoyed a wonderful Christmas.
