Mrs. Charles Miller lived in Elk Grove, a census-designated place overlapping the borders of Columbia County and Sullivan County in north-central Pennsylvania.

This may have been a center of lumbering or other enterprises in the past, as the community had a post office from 1890 to 1895, and again from 1905 to 1914.

The community in 2023 had an estimated 37 residents.

In May of 1911, Mrs. Miller was celebrating a birthday.

For the occasion, she received a a colorful postcard from Madge Robbins.

The postcard was mailed from Elk Grove, suggesting that Madge was a neighbor or nearby friend.

The face of the postcard features a drawing of two birds with brilliant plumage.

The birds are drawn in flight, against a gold sphere which is surrounded by flowers of vibrant colors

Below the scene, gold letters announce, “Birthday Greetings”.

The drawing is lightly embossed, which can be observed most easily on the image of the reverse.

The postcard publisher is not identified, but I am confident that the work was printed in Europe.

We see Post Card rendered in the alternative “Post Karte” and “Post Carte”.

On the reverse, the space for “Correspondence” shows only the brief inscription: “From Madge Robbins”.

It is possible that Madge and Mrs. Miller saw one another on a very regular basis – so that there was no news to share.

Mrs. Miller preserved the postcard in very good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that Mrs. Miller enjoyed a splendid birthday, and that the correspondents exchanged many more postcards.
