“A Good Hold on Me” – Pequea, PA (1915)

Miss Mabel Fulton lived in Safe Harbor, the community that grew up around the confluence of the Conestoga and the Susquehanna Rivers in southern Lancaster County, PA.

This area is now dominated by a large hydro-electric dam which was constructed in 1930-1931.

In June of 1915, Mabel received a postcard from Chester.

Chester mailed the postcard from Pequea, an unincorporated community where the Pequea Creek flows into the Susquehanna.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Pequea was a resort community, boasting a large Inn and a steam-rail connection to a nearby trolley park.

The face of the postcard shows a young couple in a secluded meadow bordered by trees.

The young man stands behind the young woman and encircles her with his arms.

This might be an unhappy scene of aggression, but the young woman smiles and shows no signs of discomfort with the embrace.

Beside the pair, a printed legend declares, “YOU HAVE A GOOD HOLD ON ME”.

I could not find a publisher’s mark, but the postcard is described as one of the “Life Series” of greetings.

On the reverse, Chester appears to struggle to compose his message.

He writes, “Must excuse bad writing”.

Chester does ask Mabel to “Write Soon”.

It may be that Chester and Mabel have exchanged greetings in the past.

Chester’s last name, beginning with G, has been obliterated.

I cannot tell if the damage to the name is deliberate, or who might have wished to expunge the name.

Mabel preserved the postcard throughout her life.

One hopes that Chester received an answer to his greeting, that he and Mabel found romantic success, and that Chester managed to improve his handwriting.
