A Scene from Gillie’s Fatherland – Minneapolis, Minnesota (1906)

Miss Emma Coleman lived in Minneapolis, the commercial and manufacturing center of the upper Mississippi River.

In October of 1906, Emma received a postcard from an unknown correspondent in the same city.

The face of the postcard is a beautiful depiction of a Norwegian Fjord.

The image is entitled, “Motiv fra Nordfjord”. which is view of Nordfjord.

Nordfjord is a region surrounding the fjord in western Norway.

The artist’s name, Julius Holok, can be seen in the lower right.

The lovely postcard was published by J. Karlsen in Bergen.

Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway.

Emma’s friend did not inscribe a name, suggesting that Emma would be sure to know the sender.

On the margin of the reverse, the sender did inscribe, “Scene from Gillie’s Fatherland”.

Much of Minnesota was settled by immigrants from Scandinavia – family names and cultural institutions representing Swedish and Norwegian heritage are abundant in Minneapolis.

We don’t know how Gillie is related to Emma or to the sender of the postcard, but an appreciation of Norway would be widely-shared among people in the area.

(Gilie is often a nickname, related to Julie or Julia for girls, or “Ghillie” as a Scottish name for boys. It would be great to know more about the Gillie of the postcard and of her/his relationship to Norway.)

Emma seems to have been pleased with the pretty postcard as it was preserved in very good condition throughout her life.
