A Sunday School Reward – 1920

We have seen other postcard stories in which decorative cards and mottoes were presented to students of the Sunday School.

Some were awarded specifically for attendance, but others make references to “Merit”- which could (I assume) include the memorization of Bible verses or proficiency in recalling lessons.

This pretty card does not note a denominational publisher, and could have been awarded in a public elementary school in 1920.

On the reverse, some one inscribed a time period – “Jan. to Mar. 1920”.

This strongly suggests that this was a Sunday School award, as almost all Sunday School materials were prepared on a quarterly basis.

The face of the card shows a colorful array of purple and white blossoms.

Beneath the flowers is a verse from the 103rd Psalm:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits”.

On the reverse is printed another Psalm in  its entirety, the 19th.

Beginning with the declaration, “The Heavens declare the glory of God”. the Psalm concludes with the aspiration, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be always acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord”.

Someone preserved the award for a century; one hopes that the student to whom it was given found comfort and encouragement in the words.
