A Valentine to Father – Utahville, PA (1911)

Mr. William Shaw lived in Utahville, a populated place in Clearfield County of central Pennsylvania.

Utahville, founded as Mount Pleasant, no longer has a post office (closed in 1966).

Residents of this area (west of State College, north of Altoona) now receive mail from Coalport.

In February of 1911, Mr. Shaw received a Valentine postcard from his daughter, Gertrude.

Gertrude mailed the postcard from Big Run, a small borough on a stream emptying into the Mahoning Creek of Jefferson County, PA.

In 1910, the borough (about 30 miles west of Utahville) was almost twice as large as it is today.

The face of the postcard is a drawing of clasped hands upon a red heart.

The heart is suspended from an ornate border on which a rose is resting.

Beneath the drawing is inscribed a title: “A Valentine Message”.

On the reverse, Gertrude addresses “Dear father” and asks “What are you doing these fine Spring days.”

Gertrude answers her own question, “Studying farming I suppose.”

The message concludes with Gertrude’s urging for him to “come out soon.”

Mr. Shaw preserved the St. Valentine’s Day greeting throughout his life.

One hopes that he was able to visit Gertrude in the fine days of Spring and that the two maintained a cordial correspondence for many years.
