“Abby Didn’t Look at Me” – Washington Boro, PA (circa 1925)

Miss Anna Mann lived in Washington Boro, the pleasant community of Lancaster County that overlooks the Susquehanna River in south-central Pennsylvania.

We met Miss Mann in another postcard story – “Walking the Dog”.

This postcard lacks a postmark with date and location – so we can only approximate the date that it was mailed.

Sometime around 1925, Anna received a postcard from her cousin, Margaret.

Margaret seems to live nearby, as she plans to visit after Sunday School on Sunday, and she mentions “going to Lititz” -another community in Lancaster County.

Although the face of the postcard has a Biblical scene – the young Jesus in the company of his parents – Margaret’s message relates only to recent events.

The postcard was published by the Whitney Company of Worcester, Massachusetts and dates from the early 1920’s.

A verse from the Gospel of St. Luke, describing the Grace of God upon Jesus, is printed beneath the postcard art.

On the reverse, Margaret reports that “I saw Abby on Sunday evening”, but “he didn’t look at me”.

It is unknown if this disappointment led to Margaret’s decision not “to go to the festivel (sic)”.

I assume that Anna and Margaret are still young enough that the disinterest of a beloved object is a soul-crushing experience.

One hopes that Margaret visited Anna as planned, that the cousins shared tale of their romantic crushes, and that both found satisfying relationships.

Genealogical Notes

These notes begin with Margaret, the writer of the postcard.

Margaret Mann was born in Lancaster, PA in March of 1905, the daughter of Henry S. Mann (1862-1941) and Maggie M. Sherick (1872-1945).

Margaret did not marry Abby – she was wed in May of 1928 to Christian E. Herr (1906-1975).

Margaret and Christian had a son and a daughter, and lived in Manor Township (western Lancaster County) throughout their lives.

Margaret died in 1965, and is buried in Mountville, PA.

Margaret’s father, Henry Mann, was the brother of Eli Seitz Mann (1859-1951).

Eli and Henry had six brothers – of the eight siblings in this family, none were girls.

Eli Seitz Mann married Anna Forry Rohrer (1861-1938) in September of 1893.

Eli and Anna had 7 children, four girls and three boys.

Their last child, Anna Mary Rohrer Mann, was born in February of 1904.

Anna Mary married C. Gerald Schrite – I cannot find the date of the wedding.

The couple lived in Manor Township throughout their lives – they had no children.

Anna Mann died in January of 1988 and is buried in the cemetery of Habecker Mennonite Church in Manor Township.
