Ada Sends a Christmas Greeting – Glen Cove, NY (1908)

Mr. H. A. Carpenter lived in Glen Cove, now a city on the north shore of Long Island.

In the early 20th century, Glen Cove was a part of the “gold coast” of large mansions and country estates that covered this edge of Long Island.

In December of 1908, Mr. Carpenter received a Christmas postcard from his sister, Ada Small.

Ada mailed the postcard from Glen Cove, suggesting that she lived near her brother.

The face of the postcard is unusual; a fringed ribbon of cloth material lies against a background of a figured, grey material.

The fringed ribbon bears a pattern of holly leaves.

In the middle of the ribbon is a framed medallion drawing of a lone rural structure in a wintry landscape.

The words, “A merry Christmas” are printed on the left side of the face.

The postcard was copyright in 1908 by the F. H. Company of New York.

On the reverse, Ada writes, “From your Sister, Ada B. Small”.

One hopes that the siblings and their families enjoyed a splendid Christmas.
