Aunt Anna’s Birthday – Neoga, Illinois (1914)

Mrs. Anna Abernathy lived in Neoga, Illinois – a small city in central Illinois.

Neoga developed as a center of the railroad in the state.

In July of 1914, Mrs. Abernathy was celebrating her birthday.

Bernardine Francis Jenkins, the niece of Mrs. Abernathy sent a postcard in celebration of the event.

Bernardine lived in Sullivan, Illinois – another small city in central Illinois.

Sullivan is about 27 miles from Neoga.

(Abraham Lincoln brought cases to the courthouse in Sullivan when he was a young lawyer, and Lincoln debated Stephen Douglas there in their bitter campaign for the Senate.)

The postcard, printed in the United States, is illustrated by a medallion enclosing a lakeside scene.

Large pink flowers surround the text, “Accept all good wishes for a very happy birthday”.

The postcard was sent, “with love”.

I have not been able to find additional information about Mrs. Abernathy or about her niece, Bernardine Jenkins.

One hopes that their friendship continued for many years.
