Basket of Flowers for Mrs. Schaum – Lancaster, PA (1909)

Mrs. Schaum lived at 108 South Prince Street, which would have been close to the historic St. Mary’s Church.

The house in which Mrs. Schaum lived is no longer standing on that site.

On February 13, Mrs. Schaum received a beautifully-colored postcard from an unknown friend in Philadelphia.

The postcard, printed in Germany, is illustrated with a drawing of a basket of flowers lying on its side.

It is possible that the card, with a greeting of “Best Wishes” was intended as an offering for St. Valentine’s Day.

It is also possible that Mrs. Schaum was celebrating a birthday.

One hopes that Mrs. Schaum enjoyed the occasion; the pretty illustration was saved for more than a hundred years.
