Beatrice Kennedy & St. Patrick

Beatrice Kennedy Receives St. Patrick’s Day Greeting from Grandma – 1912

Grandma was in Toronto, Canada when she mailed a St. Patrick’s Day postcard to “Dear little Beatrice” in Minneapolis.

Despite Grandma’s addressing her as, “…good little girlie”, Beatrice was not a child.

Miss Kennedy was employed by a firm at the Flour Exchange.

In the early 20th century, Minneapolis was a thriving center for the milling of grain (dams on the Mississippi) and food processing (Pillsbury, et al.).

The Flour Exchange, a commodities trading center, was a big business.

(When I worked in the Twin Cities almost eighty years later, the remnants of the dams and grain elevators were still visible along the River.)

The embossed postcard, featuring traditional Irish symbols, was printed with green and gold coloration.

One hopes that Beatrice and Grandma enjoyed the feast day of St. Patrick in 1912.
