Willard Gets A Name – circa 1918
Ted and Mabel Bowles had a son; the small family was photographed at an unknown studio about 1918.
Like many others who had photographic portraits made, the Bowles had postcards printed to share their picture with friends.
A thoughtful friend labeled the reverse of the photograph, “Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bowles and baby”.
At a later time, in bolder pen strokes, the name “Willard” is applied.
The photograph was then renamed, “Ted and Mabel Bowles and Willard”.
It would be a boon to the lovers of old photographs if everyone was so conscientious about identifying their photographs.
One hopes that the young Bowles family enjoyed long and prosperous lives.
