Brother John and the Prayer Meeting – Batavia, Ohio (1910)

Mr. John Pierce lived on a Rural Delivery Route outside Batavia, a village of Clermont County in southwest Ohio.

Mr. Pierce appears to belong to a Church which (as many Protestant churches once did) in which members address one another with familial titles – “Brother” and “Sister”.

In January of 1910, John received a postcard greeting from Ernest White.

“Brother White” wrote from Cozaddale, an unincorporated community in Warren County of southwest Ohio.

Cozaddale is 16 miles north of Batavia; both communities are east of Cincinnati.

(The namesake of the Cozaddale community had a colorful life, fleeing the community to avoid a murder charge.)

The face of the postcard is a brightly-printed verse from the 3rd Epistle of St. John:

“Beloved, I wish above all things, that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

The Apostle expresses his hope that the faithful may be in heath and prosper even as their souls have been healed and enriched.

The postcard was published by the “Church of God Missionary Home” in New York City – but was printed in Germany.

(The “Church of God” emerged in the mid-19th century as a Pentecostal assembly headquartered in Cleveland, Tennessee.  I am not sure if this is the denomination related to the postcard.)

On the reverse, Brother White writes that “Prayer Meeting was announced at our house on Thursday night”.

Unfortunately, Brother White notes, “Last week, a few (were) out”.

I interpret this to mean that some of the faithful had been absent from the Prayer Meeting.

Brother White, to prevent such falling away, is sending postcard reminders.

One hopes that Brother John Pierce was able to participate in the Prayer Meeting with all the members, and that the Prayer Meeting was a blessing to them.
