“Charlotte Sends a New Year Pheasant” – Buffalo, New York (1919)

Miss Grace Dayton lived in Buffalo, the transportation hub and manufacturing center at the head of Lake Erie in western New York State.

I the last days of December, 1919, Grace was given a New Year postcard from Charlotte.

The postcard was not mailed, so Charlotte lived nearby or forwarded the postcard by an intermediary or within a letter.

The face of the postcard combines a medallion drawing against a large geometric design that contains a printed greeting in gaudy script.

The message reads: “A Happy New Year With Every Good Wish”.

Within the medallion, we see an ice-dotted tree trunk and bending boughs covered with snow.

Beneath the tree is a male pheasant and (what I believe is) a female pheasant.

On the reverse, Charlotte repeats a New Year greeting and reports “have just enough snow for good sleighing.”

Yesterday, Charlotte enjoyed “my first sleigh ride.”

In the corner of the postcard where a stamp would be found, Charlotte has affixed the Red Cross Stamp for 1919.

The postcard was sent “With Love”, and Grace preserved it very well throughout her life.

One hopes that the friends had many pleasurable experiences of sleighing, that they enjoyed a prosperous New Year, and that they remained correspondents for many years.
