Christmas Greeting to Aunt Hannah – Strasburg, PA (1918)

Mrs. Hannah Shultz was in Willow Street, a small community a few miles south of Lancaster, PA.

The unincorporated settlement was named for the willow trees that once lined the main thoroughfare.

In December of 1918, Mrs. Shultz received a Christmas postcard from her niece, Sue E. Young.

Sue addressed the postcard to Strasburg, an historic town southeast of Lancaster, but the address is corrected in pencil by the postmaster.

Sue mailed the postcard from another place in Pennsylvania; the original postmark is overlaid with the receiving mark at Strasburg.

Mrs. Shultz may have lived previously in Strasburg, or she may have been spending the holiday in Willow Street and the obliging post office forwarded the postcard.

The face of the postcard is a medallion drawing of a rural dwelling – the framed scene is surrounded by swirls of holly.

A gilded legend proclaims, “Christmas Greetings”.

In smaller letters, one reads a couplet:

I wish you a Happy Christmas day,

With memories sweet of the past.”

On the reverse, Sue extends further good wishes:

“We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year”.

Sue closes by identifying herself as, “Your niece”.

Aunt Hannah saved the postcard in good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that she and her niece, and all the members of their families, enjoyed a wonderful Christmas in 1918.
