Courtly Love for Ella – Sellersburg, Indiana (1911)

Miss Ella White lived in Sellersburg, a town in southeast Indiana.

In February of 1911, Ella received a lovely Valentine postcard from Rossie (I believe this is the name inscribed on the reverse).

The postcard was mailed from Charlestown, a city in Clark County of southeast Indiana.

Charlestown began as a milling town, but grew enormously during World War II due to the development of an ammunition plant there.

Sellersburg is about six miles southwest of Charlestown.

The face of the postcard is a pretty illustration of a couple in the elaborate garb of the 18th century.

The man sports a fine silk jacket and he doffs a tri-corner hat.

The young woman’s gown is adorned with an abundance of fine lace.

Both the young man and the young woman may be wearing wigs.

The courtly pair stands amid flowers and within a frame of cupids and hearts.

The cupids bear hearts which contain the words, “A Gift of Love”.

On the reverse, Rossie has inscribed a lengthy message that begins with inquiries about the health of Ella and her household.

Apparently, the winter has been a mild one as Rossie writes, “…we have had a warm winter so far, I expect it will be cold before the real Spring comes…”

Rossie has had a recent injury to his arm and shoulder, and he is in pain.

Ella is asked to excuse the” scribbling” due to this injury.

Rossie seems well-acquainted with Ella’s family and friends, as the message closes with several references to others: “Tell your Mama hello for me”, “Pink says tell John howdy for him”, “how is Noah and family”.

Rossie “would like to see you all”, and asks Ella to “answer soon”.

One hopes that Rossie recovered from the shoulder injury, that the weather remained mild, and that the friends were able to visit one another.
