Cupids for Jesse – Oil City, PA (circa 1910)

Jesse Dyson lived in Oil City, the town on the Oil River in northwest Pennsylvania that became an early center of the oil industry.

In a year near 1910, Jesse received a lovely postcard Valentine.

Although the postcard is addressed and has a stamp, the postcard was not mailed.

It may have been hand-delivered by a neighbor, classmate, or nearby friend.

The face is a lovely example of Valentine art from the era before World War I.

The postcard was printed in Germany.

A large heart is festooned with silken scarves and bunches of blue forget-me-nots.

Beneath the heart, a pair of winged cupids float on clouds

Gilded letters announce, “To My Valentine”.

On the reverse, we learn that the postcard was presented by Ruth Elizabeth.

Alas, we have no information about the relation of Jesse to Ruth.

One hopes that the two remained affectionate friends and correspondents for many years.
