Dad Hopes Mollie Will Visit Maine – Biddeford, Maine (1917)

Miss Mollie Scott lived in Brooklyn, the bustling borough of industry and commerce in New York City.

When Mollie lived there, Brooklyn boasted a large naval base, and diverse industries lining the East River.

In September of 1917, Mollie received a postcard from Dad.

Dad was in Biddeford, the city on the Saco River in southeast Maine.

At the time Dad was in Biddeford, the area was home to numerous mills that enriched the city.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of “Crescent and South Streets” in Biddeford.

This charming scene includes horse-drawn buggies proceeding along the trolley track.

On the reverse, Dad reports that “this is a very pretty country”.

Maine is so attractive that Dad “would like to send you all next summer.”

Dad concludes his message by sending “love to all”.

There are no clues as to why Dad is in Maine.

The First World War was raging in Europe, and it is possible that Dad was performing some work related to the war effort.

Mollie preserved the postcard throughout her life.

One hopes that Dad was able to show the pretty towns of Maine to all the family at a later time.
