Mr. Stanley Poe lived in Tempe, a city in the East Valley region of Maricopa County in central Arizona.
Today, Tempe lies within the metropolitan region of Phoenix and is the home of the main campus of Arizona State University.

We met Stanley in another postcard story:
“Veronica Is Having a Good Time” (1937)
In June of a year near 1940, Stan received a postcard from Dick.
Dick mailed the postcard from “Crater Lake”: the post office is located in the Rim Village which is the headquarters of the National Park in southern Oregon.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of Crater Lake, printed in the “linen” style that became popular in the mid-1930’s.

Crater Lake the deepest lake in the United States, was formed within the caldera of a collapsed volcano.

(The collapse of the volcano occurred about 7500 years ago and Native American tribes in the area have oral histories related to the spectacular event.)
No rivers enter the lake; it is filled entirely by rainwater.
Crater Lake is admired for the clarity of its water and for its dark blue appearance.
The Crater Lake National Park was created in 1902, the fifth National Park.

The postcard photograph is attributed to the Wesley Andrews Company of Portland, Oregon.

On the reverse, we find the badly-applied postmark which makes it difficult to read the year in which the postcard was mailed.
Dick begins his message, “Dear Stan”.
Although it was the 18th of June, Dick reports 30-foot drifts of snow and very cold temperatures.
One hopes that, despite the chill, Dick appreciated the beauty of the lake.
A genealogist who follows these postcard stories has noted that Stan became Dr. Stanley Poe of Tempe, AZ.
Born 6 Mar 1915/16 in Yonkers, NY, Stan was in Tempe before 1937.
Stan married Mary Frances McAllister of Tempe in 1939..
Stan died on 15 Sept 2010.
