Does He Mean Business? – Kings Mills, Ohio (1910)

Miss Irean Roche lived in Kings Mills, a census-designated place on the west bank of the Little Miami River in southwest Ohio.

In January of 1910, Irean received a postcard from Nellie.

Nellie mailed the greeting from Gallipolis, a village on the Ohio River in southeast Ohio.

(The founding of the city, by a group of French aristocrats fleeing the French Revolution, is a fascinating story.)

The face of the postcard is an amusing illustration of anxious parents sneaking a peek at a courtship in progress.

A young man sits close to his beloved, and has laid a hand on her arm.

The young woman looks at him fondly, and the two seem to be responding affectionately to one another.

From behind a curtain, another couple is making furtive observations of the young lovers.

I assume that the spies are the parents of the maiden being wooed.

A caption explains the scene: “I Wonder If He Means Business”.

“Business”, it seems certain, means a forthcoming proposal of marriage.

On the reverse, Nellie does not allude at all to romance or courtship.

She acknowledges receipt of a card from Irean and asks “how are you getting along”.

Nellie makes an unclear reference to plans for her return.

It seems that Nellie was accustomed to walk to the post office with Irean, as Nellie asks, “who goes to the post office now with you.”

In ending her message, Nellie promises to reclaim her role as post office companion.

(Nellie’s message is not free of errors in spelling and grammar; it is possible that she is misspelling the name of “Irene”.)

One hopes that Irean was pleased by the postcard, that Nellie returned home safely, and that the friends resumed their trips to the post office together.
