Easter Carnations for Mayme – Monroe, NY (1909)

Miss Mayme White lived in Monroe, a town in Orange County of southeast New York.

This area, now named for President James Monroe, was settled by Dutch and English immigrants attracted by the agricultural potential of the Hudson Valley

During the American Revolution, many parts of Orange County became sites of intrigue and strategic movements while the British occupied New York City.

In April of 1909, Mayme received an Easter postcard from her friend, Margaret.

Margaret mailed the greeting from Marietta, Ohio.

Marietta is a lovely small city where the Muskingum River meets the and Ohio River in southeast Ohio.

Named for Marie Antoinette, the city was the first settlement of the Northwest Territory at the end of the Revolutionary War.

The face of the postcard displays a medallion drawing of a skiff being poled beside an ancient cottage or mill.

The medallion is flanked by large carnations and blue “bachelor’s buttons”.

The flowers and the frame are lightly-embossed.

A printed legend announces, “A Joyful Easter”.

I could not identify a publisher of the postcard.

On the reverse, Margaret assures Mayme that she has not forgotten her friend.

Margaret writes, “I often think of you if I do not have time to write.”

In this year, Margaret hopes “to see you more than I did last year”.

Mayme preserved the postcard in very good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that Margaret and Mayme enjoyed a wonderful Easter, that they were able to meet in 1909, and that the friends enjoyed a long correspondence.
