“Easter Chick Rings the Bell” – Minneapolis, MN (1915)

Miss Adams lived in Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota and an industrial hub for the upper Mississippi River region.

(The first name of Miss Adams is hard to read – perhaps, Maryllu or Maryllin.

The senders may have spelled the name incorrectly, but the double “l” is clearly inscribed.)

In April of 1915, Miss Adams received an Easter postcard from Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Stark.

The postcard was mailed in Minneapolis, suggesting that the Starks were neighbors or nearby friends.

On the face of the postcard, a medallion drawing of a rural scene is surrounded by a gilt frame.

The medallion is flanked by large lilies, and a gold bell is attached to the frame.

An Easter chick pulls a red ribbon to sound the bell.

“Easter Greetings” is printed in black script.

The image, although charming, shows the decline in print quality that was a consequence of the First World War.

The lines are incomplete and fuzzy, the coloration bleeds into the adjoining areas, and the overall design is simple and includes large blank spaces. (I made significant digital repairs to the outlines of the lilies and to areas where the colors had “bled”.)

On the reverse, Mr. and Mrs. Stark inscribed a brief message, “Greetings to all”.

Miss Adams seems to have been pleased by the Easter chick as she preserved the postcard in good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that Miss Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Stark, and all their families enjoyed a wonderful Easter.
