Emily Sends an Irish Couple – Wilton, Maine (1913)

Mrs. Derwood Killock lived in Wilton, a town in south-central Maine.

Founded as a mill town, Wilton became known for the manufacture of shoes (Bass shoes).

In March of 1913, Mrs. Killock received a St. Patrick Day’s greeting from Emily.

Emily mailed the postcard from Portland, the coastal city and busy port in southeast Maine.

The face of the postcard is a charming drawing of two Irish youths in traditional garb.

The lass wears a green bonnet and a long apron.

The lad is wearing a green suit, and holds a top hat with a green band and a buckle.

The border appears to have a green ribbon woven through the margins of the postcard.

Rounded letters proclaim, “St. Patrick’s Day”.

In a smaller font, “Fond Memories” is printed.

There is a mark of the artist or the publisher, but I cannot distinguish it.

On the reverse, Emily offers, “Best Wishes”.

She asks Mrs. Killock, “Let me know when you are coming down again”.

One hopes that Mrs. Killock and Emily enjoyed the feast of St, Patrick and that the two remained friends and correspondents for many years.
