Eulalia Will Bring the Music – Shullsburg, Wisconsin (1909)

Miss Eulalia Hendershot lived in Platteville, a city amid the ravines and groves of the “driftless region” of southwest Wisconsin.

The city grew up along the Little Platte River in the Platte River Valley.

Earlier postcard stories have mentioned Platteville and the “driftless” geological distinction.

In October of 1909, Eulalia received a postcard from her friend, Myrtle.

Myrtle lived in Shullsburg, one of the oldest settlements in Wisconsin.

The city was settled in the 1820’s, due to the presence of lead which could be mined in this southwest area of Wisconsin.

Today, the city boasts a large and varied historic district.

Shullsburg is 22 miles southeast of Platteville.

The face of the postcard is a lovely painting of a rural path in Autumn.

A solitary figure on a horse or pony passes a stand of colorful trees toward hilly fields beyond.

The work is entitled, “When the Leaves Begin to Turn”.

The artwork is not signed, and the publisher (probably in the US) is not identified.

On the reverse, Myrtle addresses her friend as “Lalia, dear”.

It seems that Eulalia is about to depart for a visit to Myrtle, and Myrtle asks, “be sure and bring some of your music”.

Myrtle explains, “so we can enjoy it while you are here”.

It is not clear if Eulalia is expected to bring phonograph records or sheet music.

Myrtle sends “Love to all”.

One hopes Eulalia was able to make the planned journey, that she remembered the music, and that the friends enjoyed a pleasant visit.

The postcard art was well-preserved for more than a century.
