“Eva Missed Mother’s Letter” – Idaho Springs, Colorado (1908)

Miss Eva Martin lived in Lockport, a city and the surrounding town in Niagara County of western New York State.

The city’s name reflects the presence of the final locks of the Erie Canal that were constructed here, near Lake Ontario, in the early 19th century.

The city today contains numerous historic structures, including homes, mills, and civic structures in several historic districts – and the Union Railroad Station.

In March of 1908, Eva received a postcard from her mother.

The postcard was mailed from Idaho Springs, a small city in the canyon of Clear Creek County in north-central Colorado.

Located about 30 miles west of Denver, Idaho Springs was founded by prospectors during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of 1859.

The face of the postcard is a hand-colored photograph of the snow-capped Rocky Mountains – the largest mountain system in North America.

Evergreen branches in the foreground frame the scene of a wide valley.

A printed title identifies Colorado as “The Backbone of the Continent”.

The postcard was published by the Thayer Publishing Company of Denver; the card was printed in the United States.

On the reverse, Mother greets her, “Dear Daughter”.

Mother reports, “just read your letter this evening”.

Unfortunately. Mother mailed a letter to Eva “this afternoon” at an address in Michigan.

Mother explains, “I thought you would be there”.

It appears as though Eva had been visiting in Michigan, as Mother adds, “was glad you had a nice time.”

In other news, Roy has written to mother and expresses a wish for Eva to write to him – “he is at Jennie’s.”

A smudged receiving postmark in Lockport has obscured part of the final sentence – I believe that “Mother is at Mary’s all week.”

Mother sends the mountain scene with “Love to al”.

One hopes that Mother’s letter was forwarded to Eva, that Eva wrote to Roy, and that the family continued to communicate through postcards.
