Five Chicks for Polly – Spring Brook, PA (1909)

Miss Polly Pembridge lived in Spring Brook, an unincorporated community of Lackawanna County in northeast Pennsylvania.

In April of 1909, Polly received an Easter postcard from Agnes.

Agnes posted the greeting from Wilkes Barre, a city of Luzerne County in northeast Pennsylvania.

The discovery of rich coal deposits in the area around Wilkes Barre led to growth and prosperity for this community through the 19th century.

Wilkes Barre, on the Susquehanna River, attracted large number of immigrants to work in mines and the railroads and in shipping industries.

The face of the postcard shows four chicks perched on a limb.

A long floral garland swoops down to where a fifth chick scratches on the ground.

Within the garland is a printed legend, “To Wish you a Happy Easter”.

The charming postcard was printed in Saxony and published by the English firm of Raphael Tuck & Sons.

On the reverse, Agnes reports that she “will answer your letter in a few days”.

Unfortunately, Agnes has “no time now”.

In addition, Agnes remains uncertain of her plans and cannot commit to “coming up for Sunday”.

The trip from Wilkes Barre to Spring Brook was more than 20 miles, and required a circuit around forests that are now part of Pennsylvania State Game Lands.

One hopes that Agnes had a pleasant break from her busy schedule, that the letter from Polly was answered, and that the friends enjoyed a blessed Easter.
