Flossie Receives a New Year’s Greeting – Topeka, Kansas (1913)

Miss Flossie Flory lived in Topeka, the capitol city of the State of Kansas.

On December 31, 1913, Flossie received a New Year’s Greeting from her father.

The postcard was mailed from Topeka, so it is unclear if Flossie still lived at home.

Because the postcard was mailed, I suspect that Flossie was living independently -although close to her father.

The face of the postcard bears brightly-colored geometric ornamentation over which a couplet is printed.

The inscription is an invocation, “May all your years be free from tears, and filled with the happiness that cheers”.

The sentiment is earnest, although the verse is a bit clumsy.

On the reverse, the message from Flossie’s father is also somewhat awkward- “Your Dad’s Greetings”.

Father’s initials, “J. J. F.”, appear below the spare inscription.

One hopes that Flossie and her father remained on affectionate terms for many years.

Flossie saved the postcard throughout her life.
