“Gladys is Fishing and Sleeping” – Verona, Ontario (1940)

Miss Grace Gordon lived in Spring City, a small borough on the Schuylkill River in Chester County of southeast Pennsylvania.

Across the river lies another pretty borough, Royersford, in Montgomery County.

In August of 1940, Grace received a postcard from Gladys.

The postcard was mailed from Verona, a small community within the sparsely-populated Township of South Frontenac in the Province of Ontario, Canada.

Verona is about 23 miles north of Kingston, the city at the northern end of Lake Ontario and the beginning of the St. Lawrence River.

The face of the postcard is an uncolored photograph of the “United Church” in Verona.

The United Church of Canada was founded in 1925, the first union of congregations from the Methodist and the Presbyterian traditions’

In many parts of Canada, small communities could not support a multitude of churches, and some communities had already pioneered the sharing of sacred spaces.

Whereas many communities in the US once had meeting houses that were shared by different congregations, Canada achieved an integrated fellowship of the Protestant faithful.

Since 1968, Trinity United Church (shown in the postcard photograph) has absorbed members from other communities where the village church has been closed.

From the church’s website, the congregation seems to be thriving – it closed during August of 2025 for structural renovations.

On the reverse, Gladys reports, “Well, here we are doing some fishing and sleeping”.

It appears that Gladys is married to a man named, Horace, as she adds “Horace, Jr. Is with us”.

Gladys does not disclose how she is enjoying the time; she notes only, “It has been quite warm.”

Despite the lack of color, Grace seems to have been pleased with the postcard photograph – it was preserved in good condition.

One hopes that Gladys and Horace and Horace, Jr. had a wonderful time in Verona, enjoyed successful fishing, and returned safely to their home.
