“Grandma is Ninety-One” – Weldon, Iowa (1909)

On Christmas Day of 1909, Mrs. Westfall was celebrating her 91st birthday.

Mrs. Westfall lived in Weldon, a small city on a railroad line in south-central Iowa.

The population of Weldon in 1910 was 308; less than half that number live there today.

For the celebration, Grandma received a postcard greeting from Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Showers.

The Showers lived nearby and mailed the postcard with an address of “city”.

It appears that the postmaster and postal carriers were familiar with “Grandma Westfall”, as there is no street address.

The face of the postcard shows a circlet of lilies-of-the-valley enclosing the printed message, “Birthday Greetings”.

The postcard was badly damaged by foxing, and I made significant digital repairs to the face.

Some details and subtle background patterns are lost through the airbrushing of dark spots.

On the reverse, the Showers send “kindliest greetings” and identify as “friends”.

One hopes that Grandma Westfall was pleased by the postcard and that she enjoyed her birthday and the Feast of Christmas.
