Grandmother Tours the Mountains – Selma, Alabama (1949)

Vernon Copeland lived in Selma, the city on the Alabama River in central Alabama.

In July of 1949, Vernon received a postcard from his grandmother.

Grandmother mailed the postcard from Bellevue, a city in northwest Washington.

Located across Lake Washington from the city of Seattle, Bellevue is now home to several technology companies.

The face of the postcard is a lovely night-time scene of moonlight on the Georgetown Lake in Montana.

Georgetown Lake, high in the Anaconda Range, was created by a dam on the North Fork River in the 1880’s.

Intended to supply water to the mines, the reservoir is now a popular resort area and a renowned fish hatchery.

The postcard was published originally by Leland Lund of Tacoma, Washington.

Like many early postcards, this image was later re-published by Curt Teich of Chicago.

We don’t know how long Grandmother has been traveling, but she has covered a lot of territory.

On the reverse, Grandmother reports, “I have been in the mountains day and night…”

Grandmother has visited “the Rockies, the Bitter Root in Idaho, and the Cascades in Washington.”

One hopes that Vernon was pleased by the scene of the mountain lake and that Grandmother shared many travel stories upon her return.

NOTE:

I hesitated to post this story because the date is much more recent than most of the postcards I share.

Vernon Copeland, however, is no longer living.

Vernon was born in Selma in 1930; he would have been around 19 years old when he received the postcard from Grandmother.

After attending Auburn University, Vernon completed a medical degree at Alabama University Medical School in Birmingham.

Vernon became an Air Force physician, until his discharge with the rank of Captain in 1960.

After leaving the Air Force, Dr. Copeland moved to DeLand, Florida where he practiced as an obstetrician/gynecologist until retiring in 1986.

Vernon was married to Eleanor, and the couple had a son and two daughters.

At the time of his death in 1922, at age 92, Vernon had ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

His funeral was held in a church affiliated with the Church of God.
