Harold Offers Romance to Ethel – Galion, Ohio (circa 1915)

Several months ago, we met a young woman of Galion, Ohio; she collected postcard photographs of
churches.

Her name was Emma Hankel.

Today, we meet Ethel Gelsenliter, a contemporary of Emma’s in the same town. Ethel, it appears, attracted offers of romance.

Sometime around 1910, Ethel received a gilded postcard with a verse in celebration of “Romance, Life,
and Love”.

The postcard was from Harold.

The postcard was not mailed, but we might assume that Harold lived nearby if the postcard was hand-
delivered.

Harold did not inscribe his surname, but it is likely that he was well-known to Ethel.

The face of the postcard is decorated with pansies, which often represented “loving feelings.”

One hopes that Ethel was thrilled to receive the postcard from Harold and that the two experienced happily “the ebb and flow” of romance, life, and love.”

Note: Norma Ethel Gelsanliter was born in Galion in 1882.

She died in Shaker Heights, Ohio in 1980, aged 88 years.

She did not marry Harold.
