“Harry Is Driving to Seattle” – Sidney, Nebraska (1934)

Miss Virginia McAllister lived in Scottsdale, now a fast-growing city (abutting Phoenix) in the desert of southwest Arizona.

In October of 1934, Virginia received a postcard from Harry.

The face of the postcard is a nice drawing of a cool stream passing through a verdant landscape.

Beneath the original artwork is a printed legend, “Greetings from Sidney, Nebraska”.

Sidney is a city in southwest Nebraska, about ten miles north of the border with Colorado.

It was named for a President of the Union Pacific Railroad.

At one time, “Fort Sidney” housed soldiers to protect workers on the Transcontinental Railroad from attacks by indigenous peoples.

I am confident that this is generic view; it is from the “Landscape” series of the postcard publisher.

(Sidney does have a watercourse, Lodgepole Creek, which passes through the city.)

On the reverse, we learn that Harry is passing through Nebraska.

He reports, “I drove 500 miles yesterday and 400 miles today.”

Harry is heading to Seattle and then to Vancouver, but he intends to keep traveling.

He projects, “If all goes well, I probably will be in Phoenix in ten days.”

Harry tells Virginia, “I hope to see you in person before very long”.

NOTE:

We met Virginia McAllister and members of her family in postcard stories over the past few years.

Some of the family lived in Glendale, Arizona and made Sunday trips across the border into Mexico.

Members of the McAllister family received a postcard from Grandmother when she visited San Francisco.

One hopes that Harry continued his trip without mishaps, that Virginia saw him in person in Arizona, and that the two maintained a friendly correspondence for many years.
