Homer Has a Birthday – McKeansburg, PA (circa 1910)

Master Homer Schoerner was growing up in McKeansburg, a census-designated place in Schuylkill County of east-central Pennsylvania.

This small community grew up around a crossroads of two highways near the Little Schuylkill River.

Sometime around 1910, Homer was given an art postcard.

The face of the postcard is a painting of a gentleman in “pinks” astride a leaping horse.

The riding habit and the hound suggest that the man was engaged in a fox hunt.

The horse, with the man sitting tall and poised, is shown mid-jump.

The scene is entitled, “Taking the Fence”.

(This does look thrilling – I had occasion to do some riding as a young adult, but never jumped more than a few short leaps across brooks.)

The publisher is not identified, although an artist’s name is partially-visible in the lower right.

The sender was M. L. Kimmel, who we assume to be an older friend or relative.

On the reverse, the sender writes, “I wish you a happy birthday and many more of them.”

I have other postcards addressed to members of the Schoerner family, and will post some of them.

This postcard was preserved in excellent condition throughout the life of young Homer.

One hopes that he enjoyed greatly his birthday.
