Miss Velma Homer lived in Hillsdale, a town in east-central New York State -near the border of Massachusetts.
This area, along the Taconic Mountain Range, now attract skiers.

In December of 1913, Velma received a postcard greeting from James.
James mailed the postcard from a rail station in New York City.
The face of the postcard shows a bit of teasing between a young couple.
The young woman holds up her finger to make a point as her beau clasps her arm.
A printed legend explains the moment, “Oh! What I know about you.”
The “secret” that the woman knows does not seem to be damaging or threatening – she is smiling at her puzzled lover.
On the reverse, we learn that Velma and James are well-acquainted with one another.
James acknowledges, “I received two of your postal cards and I was glad that you remembered … old friends.”
Velma, in a previous postcard seems to have referred to a “girl” for James.
James rejects this idea: “I never bother with N. Y. girls for they are troublesome.”
For James, “I like to have a country girl allright (sic).…”
James suggests, “if you find any (country girl), put her in the trunk and send her C.O.D.
(This is unintentionally ironic as James appears to have sent his postcard to Hillsdale with “Postage Due”.)
Although James would “like very much to come out there for a few weeks”, Velma is aware that “this is the busiest time of the year.”
The message concludes with James asking about Hazel and sending regards to Papa.
Velma preserved the greeting throughout her life.
One hopes that James was able to visit upstate New York, that he found a compatible girlfriend, that he and Mable maintained a correspondence for many years, and that James remembered to apply the correct postage to his mail.
