Jennie Invites Melvin to the Spelling Bee – York County, PA (1911)

Melvin Myers lived in Thomasville, PA, an unincorporated community about 6 miles west of York, PA.

His friend, Jennie, lived about 7 miles further west in East Berlin, PA; East Berlin is just across the county line in Adams County.

(A century earlier, the territory of Adams County was within York County.)

Like “East Petersburg” in Lancaster County, “East Berlin” was required to add an “East” to the town’s name in order to differentiate the place from another PA town with the same name.

On March 14, 1911, Jennie mailed a postcard to Melvin announcing “…Spelling at Baker’s School House on Friday, March the 17.”

I cannot find the location of Baker’s School House, although I believe it to be in East Berlin, PA.

The face of the postcard is illustrated with an Easter theme, which was somewhat premature as Easter in 1911 was not celebrated until April 16.

Mailed from East Berlin, the postcard lacks a receiving postmark in Thomasville, although it is very likely that Melvin received the card the same day.

One hopes that Jennie and Melvin were able to “spell down” the entire crowd at Baker’s School House.
