“Land of the Midnight Sun” – American-Journal-Examiner (1906)

Several nations have land within the Arctic Circle, where the tilt of the earth enables illumination by the sun at midnight for six months of the year.

Historically, Norway was known as “The Land of the Midnight Sun” because it has had inhabited areas within the Article Circle since the beginning of history.

In the United States, Alaska became known by the same moniker.

The American-Journal-Examiner was the newspaper empire that William Randolph Hearst was assembling in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The newspaper pioneered the use of the comic strip, and employed quizzes, crosswords, and contests, to build circulation.

The newspaper also printed colored postcards, in series, to inspire collectors to continue receiving the paper.

(The role of Hearst newspapers in enlarging the role of professional photographers is significant.  Many artists and photographers had some work experience with Hearst businesses.)

We are now experiencing the darkest days of the year (in the northern hemisphere).

For those who are sensitive to light deprivation, here is an image of the frozen world illuminated at midnight.

The postcard was copyrighted and distributed by the American-Journal-Examiner in 1906.
