Lilacs for Viola – Camden, New Jersey (circa 1908)

Miss Viola Weeks lived in Camden, the bustling city across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, PA.

In a year around 1908, Viola was celebrating a birthday.

It may have been in the month of December, as there is a number 12 which appears as part of a partial date) on the reverse.

Un-mailed postcards (like this one) often are preserved in better condition than those that tumble through the mail.

The lack of a postmark, however, significantly reduces the amount of information for a postcard story.

For her birthday, Miss Weeks was given a lovely postcard greeting with an embossed design of lilacs.

Beneath the purple blossoms are the words, “Hearty Congratulations”.

The postcard was printed in Europe, and is of superior quality – the design has a back that provides a smooth surface for writing on the reverse.

Unfortunately, the giver of the postcard did not inscribe a message.

The signature of “George” appears in the lower left of the reverse.

We do not know the relationship between George and Miss Weeks, but it appears that George lived nearby or had regular communication with Viola.

One hopes that Viola was delighted by the lilacs and that she had a wonderful birthday.
