“Maggie Is Going to the Lodge” – Etra, New Jersey (1919)

Mrs. George Atkinson lived in Freehold, a township in western Monmouth County of central New Jersey.

Located about 38 miles southwest of Manhattan, Freehold today is a center of commerce and transportation for the Raritan Valley region.

(The important Revolutionary War “Battle of Monmouth” is commemorated in a State Park nearby.

In July of 1919, Mrs. Atkinson received a postcard from her sister, Maggie.

Maggie mailed the postcard from Etra, a village in East Windsor Township of Mercer County in east-central New Jersey.

This village grew up around a mill in the 1770’s and today lies between the Metropolitan Regions of Philadelphia and New York.

Freehold is about 14 miles east of Etra.

The face of the postcard is a lovely drawing of an automobile, a touring car, wandering along a country lane.

Wildflowers and small plants line the route; overspreading trees shade parts of the road.

We see the heads of the riders in the receding auto; the summer scene is otherwise completely still.

Bold letters in the margin convey “Greetings from Etra, N.J.”

The charming postcard was printed in the US by an unknown publisher.

On the reverse, Maggie greets her “Dear sister and all”.

Maggie reports, “I am ready to go” and “have had a good time”.

(Maggie’s penciled handwriting is unclear in places – I may have missed a few words.)

Although “all want me to stay”, Maggie has “got to go to the Lodge tomorrow,”

The closing is written upside down at the top of the reverse: “Write to me to (sic) Perth Amboy soon” and, “Your sister, Maggie”.

(Perth Amboy is an historic waterfront city on the Raritan Bay in Middlesex County of New Jersey – about 20 miles north of Freehold.)

Mrs. Atkinson or another family member preserved the postcard in very good condition.

One hopes that Maggie returned safely from her visit and that the sisters exchanged many more postcards.
