Margie Plans to Crochet – Lancaster, PA (circa 1908)

Bessie Miller lived in Lancaster, the historic city in a rich agricultural area of southeast Pennsylvania.

Bessie resided at 555 West King Street; I do not believe that the residential building has survived.

A restaurant/bar seems to occupy the space today.

In May of a year near 1908, Bessie received a postcard from her sister, Margie.

Margie wrote from another place in Pennsylvania;  the place name includes letters that may indicate “Washington Boro”.

Only a portion of the postmark is visible, and the stamp has been torn from the postcard.

The face of the postcard is a charming engraving of a little girl feeding the ducks and geese.

A large flock of fowl is approaching, and the geese nearest to the child seem to be demanding food.

This depiction of a common farm chore is entitled, “Meal Time”.

The surface was madly marred by foxing and other discoloration – I made significant digital repairs.

I did not see, however, an indication of the artist or of the publisher.

On the reverse, sister Margie asks, “What (is) the name and address of that magazine that you had …with the crocheting in it…”

Margie then inquires about the children, presumably her nieces or nephews:

She asks, “Has any more of the children got the measles?”

One hopes that the children remained healthy, that Bessie sent the name of the magazine, and that Margie created marvelous examples of crochet mastery.
