Mrs. George Gibble and the Firefall at Yosemite – East Petersburg, PA (1932)

In 1932, Esther Groff traveled from Pennsylvania to her aunt’s home in Upland, California.

On July 12, Esther sent a postcard to her friend, Mrs. George Gibble, in East Petersburg, PA.

The postcard featured a hand-colored photograph of a tourist attraction at Yosemite National Park.

The managers of Camp Curry lit a bonfire on Glacier Point, 3200 feet above the camp.

At the conclusion of the evening entertainment, the embers were pushed over the cliff face to descend in a fiery trail.

I doubt that this custom is still performed; certainly not in the overheated and dehydrated conditions that now prevail.

On the reverse of the postcard, Esther reported that “we sure had a nice trip from Pa.”

Now the travelers are “having lots of fun.”

The fun includes “eating all kinds of fresh fruit and picking oranges from trees.”

(A reader of these Postcard Stories identified herself as a relative of Esther Groff, who was, indeed, an energetic traveler in the twenties and thirties.)
