Myrtle Enjoys the Mountains – Salem, Oregon (1919)

Miss Hazel Neiland lived in Verona, a village and a city in Dane county of south-central Wisconsin.

Verona is about ten miles southwest of Madison.

In April of 1919, hazel received a postcard from her friend Myrtle Neal.

Myrtle was spending time in Salem, the lovely capital city on the Williamette River in northwest Oregon.

The face of the postcard is a drawing of “Mount Hood from Lost Lake near Portland, Oregon”.

Mount Hood, a dormant volcano, is the highest peak in Oregon and one of the highest peaks in the Cascade Range.

Twelve named glaciers are found on Mt. Hood which boasts year-round skiing.

Although the postcard legend indicates “near Portland, Oregon”, the city is on the coast – about 50 miles west-northwest of the mountain.

The beautiful postcard vista was printed by Americhrome of Portland, and published by the Oregon News Company, also of Portland.

On the reverse, Myrtle reports that she is “enjoying the cool sea breezes and the diversified scenery”.

According to Myrtle, “the climate is delightful”.

One hopes that Hazel was thrilled to receive the postcard and that Myrtle was able to share more stories of the mountains when the friends met again.
