Myrtle Has Worked Too Hard – West Union, Iowa (1911)

Mrs. Maggie Musser lived in West Union, a small city in a rural area of northeast Iowa.

In May of 1911, Maggie received a postcard from her friend, Myrtle.

Myrtle wrote from Ruthven, is a small city amid several lakes in north-central Iowa.

Ruthven was built when the Milwaukee Railroad was laid through this rural area in 1878.

(West Union is more than 170 miles east of Ruthven.)

The face of the postcard is a bright and bold illustration of sunflowers surrounding a message in letters made of flowers.

The colorful greeting reads, “Love To All”

(There was considerable foxing on edges of the postcard, much of which I could remove digitally.)

On the reverse, Myrtle acknowledges that she received the postcard from Maggie.

Myrtle then reports, “I am not a bit well…”

The origin of the illness is ascribed to “have had to work too hard I guess…”

The message continues with reference to Warren who is “having a serious time”.

After telling about a recent “good hard rain”, Myrtle closes the message, “With love”.

One hoes that Myrtle was able to obtain some relief and healing, that Warren resolved the serious issues, and that the friends continued there correspondence for many years.
