“Norman Writes to Aunt Edna” – Cape May Courthouse, NJ (1908)

Edna Mead lived in Camden, the busting city on the Delaware River in southwest New Jersey.

In January of 1908, Edna received a postcard from her nephew.

The postcard was mailed from Cape May Court House, the unincorporated community at the southern tip of New Jersey.

Cape May Court House serves as the administrative center of Cape May County, including the seaside resort of Cape May on the Cape May peninsula.

The face of the postcard is a lightly-drawn image of a sailboat filled with flowers.

Portions of the simple design are deeply embossed.

I believe that the flowers are blue forget-me-nots.

The postcard, with its embossed design, was printed in Germany.

Beneath the sailboat is some careful printing in a childish hand, “From Norman”.

There is no other greeting, so we do not know if the postcard commemorated some milestone like a birthday.

On the reverse, Edna is addressed as “Aunt”.

The address is written to avoid the creases of the embossing.

It does not appear that the address was inscribed by Norman – the hand is that of an adult who is capable of using cursive.

In the scanned image of the reverse, one can see additional creases that were made by rough handling – either in the mail or in the century of storage.

I attempted to remove digitally the worst marks on the face.

One hopes that Aunt Edna was delighted by the postcard and that she and Norman maintained an affectionate correspondence for many years.
