On the Way to Kansas – Plain City, Ohio (1918)

Miss Emma S. Stoltzfus lived in the community of Bird-in-Hand, one of the colorful place names in eastern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

English Quakers and German Mennonites were the first to farm this fertile area in 1715.

Emma may be living at home as her address is written “c/o Jacob M. Stoltzfus”.

In May of 1918, Emma received a postcard from L. S. Y.

The mystery correspondent mailed the postcard from Plain City, a village along the Big Darby Creek in central Ohio.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of the Umbrella Factory and the Depot of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Plain City.

The photograph may have been taken in early morning, as there does not appear to be any activity in the town.

The postcard was published by the Majestic Publishing Company of Indianapolis.

On the reverse, Emma’s friend reports, “I got as far as Ohio, intend to leave for Kansas…”

The traveler seems to have an eye for farmland as the message continues, “this is a nice country through here…”

Emma seems to have appreciated the postcard as it was preserved in good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that the traveler reached Kansas safely and that Emma learned more about the trip in future days.
