Pastor Sends the Blessings of Heaven – Carlisle, PA (1913)

Miss Ida Shugart lived in Carlisle, once a frontier fort, now an academic center in the Cumberland Valley of south-central Pennsylvania.

In January of 1913, Ida received a New Year postcard from her pastor and his wife.

The postcard was mailed in Carlisle, suggesting that Ida attended a local church.

The face of the postcard features a medallion drawing of a rural church in winter.

The dim light of dusk suggests the short days at the Winter Solstice.

Bunches of holly, encrusted with snow, adorn the frame.

The face of the postcard is surrounded by icicles.

Ornate lettering below the drawing invokes, “A Happy New Year”.

The postcard was copyright by Max Feinberg and was ”Printed in Germany”.

On the reverse, the unnamed pastor proclaims, “May the rich blessings of Heaven rest upon you.”

I have a dozen examples of postcards addressed to various persons named Shugart in the region of south-central Pennsylvania.

Alas, I have not yet found a delineation of the relationships between them.

We may assume that Ida was pleased by the postcard as it was preserved in very good condition for more than a century.

One hopes that Ida, and her pastor and wife, enjoyed a wonderful 1913.
